In the wake of India’s rapid urbanization, migration to metropolitan and larger cities has surged, despite the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this growth has led to unorganized urban slums with poor living conditions, often neglected by policymakers and national health plans.

The Kushal Kishori Initiative – Comprehensive Adolescent Health & Nutrition Program:

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s, and Adolescents’ Health have opened up a unique opportunity to prioritize and accelerate action for the well-being of adolescents. Recognizing the pivotal role of adolescent health in achieving the 17 SDGs and their 169 targets, it is essential to address various aspects of their development and well-being. With India being home to the world’s largest adolescent population, their health during this critical phase profoundly shapes their future adulthood.

The Kushal Kishori Initiative is a comprehensive program that aims to tackle crucial health issues faced by adolescents, including anaemia, menstrual health problems, mental health concerns, early pregnancy and childbirth, HIV/STI, infectious diseases, violence, injuries, malnutrition, and substance abuse.

To ensure holistic adolescent health, we embrace a multidimensional approach that emphasizes awareness creation, behavior change communication for adopting healthy lifestyles, facilitating access to health services, and fostering a positive social environment that equips adolescents with essential life skills.

Our program reaches across regions like Mumbai slums, Raigad and Palghar in Maharashtra, Rajgarh district in Madhya Pradesh, and several others, where we are committed to making a transformative impact on adolescent health and nutrition.

VaxReach: Empowering Children Through Routine Immunization!

As per a Lancet Article, routine immunization has experienced a concerning 30% impact in South East Asia. In light of this and to address the national health priority of Measles and Rubella (MR) elimination, Nirabhra is taking proactive steps improve Routine Immunization (RI). We will be soon rolling out of two pilots in Mumbai slums and rural Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Madhya Pradesh, aimed at significantly improving Routine Immunization.

Our primary focus lies in reaching out to the missed out and left out children for Routine Immunization (RI). Through a comprehensive approach, we aim to enhance awareness creation, catalyse demand generation, and mobilize communities towards prioritizing RI.

At Nirabhra, we firmly believe that empowering children through routine immunization is pivotal to securing a healthier and brighter future. By collaborating with communities, healthcare providers, and stakeholders, we are determined to bridge the immunization gap and work towards the elimination of Measles and Rubella.

Functional Health & Wellness Centers (HWCs) Program:

Aligned with the Government of India’s commitment to Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) as outlined in the National Health Policy of 2017, the operationalization of Health & Wellness Centers holds paramount significance in elevating healthcare services nationwide. Nirabhra closely observes the positive impact on Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and Sub-canters resulting from this prioritization. However, we acknowledge that ensuring the delivery of all twelve defined components through Health & Wellness Centers is indispensable. To achieve this, we place special emphasis on empowering proficient health workers, implementing regular quality monitoring of services, and fostering robust community engagement with the HWCs.

In collaboration with the Village Social Transformation Foundation (VSTF), our program has conducted an Assessment Visit to Wardha, Maharashtra, with the primary objective of upgrading PHCs into fully functional Health & Wellness Centers.

By providing essential healthcare services through competent and dedicated health workers, and actively involving the community in the process, we strive to bridge the gap in healthcare delivery.

Nutrition for Mothers and Children Health (NMCH) Program:

The NMCH Program recognizes that good nutrition during the early years, from conception to birth and birth to three years of age, forms the foundation for a child’s healthy and vibrant future. Providing the right balance of macro and micro nutrients is crucial to meet the evolving requirements during conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, which ultimately fosters healthy growth in children. Insufficient nutrition during pregnancy and infancy can have lasting impacts on children’s health, affecting their development from 1 to 5 years, and chronic malnutrition during this period results in irreversible consequences for both physical and cognitive growth.

At NMCH, our primary focus is to improve the progress and outcomes of pregnancy, thereby setting the stage for a healthy child. We emphasize two key components to achieve this:

A. Providing Nutrient Supplementation through natural sources such as multi-grain flour, dry fruits, bananas, and eggs.

B. Health, Nutrition & Sanitation Education.

Apart from directly providing supplementation to mothers in need, we also prioritize education to create awareness among pregnant women and mothers. By influencing dietary choices during pregnancy and infancy, we aim to empower them to make informed decisions for their and their child’s well-being.
